Invasive alien species, introduced through human activities, are one of the leading drivers of biodiversity loss globally. These species can disrupt ecosystems, outcompete native species and cause significant economic damage. Over 37,000 alien species have been recorded worldwide, with 3,500 classified as invasive. The IPBES Invasive Alien Species Assessment highlights the urgent need for prevention and management strategies to mitigate their impact on biodiversity, human health and economies. Efforts to control invasive species are critical to achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s goal of reducing their introduction and establishment by at least 50% by 2030.
