Description

The Manager will provide dynamic and effective leadership for the implementation of Rainforest Alliance’s activities in sustainable and certified cocoa. You will take full responsibility for the project with current project TRACTIONs and SFITAL and serve as the principal liaison with the donor, the local project partner and Indonesian stakeholders. You will lead all aspects of the implementation of the projects, with day-to-day supervision under other colleagues. The position will coordinate closely with Rainforest Alliance’s international teams, such as Thriving landscape, Markets Transformation, Evaluation & Research, and Communications, certification team and in Indonesia with the finance, accounting, and HR colleagues. This is a position with supervisory responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of the cocoa program portfolio, ensuring that resources are assigned to implement activities in line with donor commitments.
  • Supervise the cocoa program team, provide them with clear plans and regular feedback coaching, and support their interaction with project partners and donors.
  • Maintain relationships with the donors and the local project partners.
  • Lead the implementation of the TRACTIONS and SFITAL project directly, including fulfilling all external reporting requirements and coordinating plans, activities, and reports with the project partners; set up and moderate monthly calls with the Project Steering Group;
  • Handle budgetary execution, with the support of the finance staff, and be responsible for the preparation of donor reports as per contractual commitments; align with internal Rainforest Alliance procedures.
  • Maintain relations with key local stakeholders such as government officials, industry representatives, cocoa processors, exporters, and NGOs; and represent the cocoa program at appropriate events and fora.
  • Ensure effective communication with the global team as needed about the impact and development of the work for the use of project learning, communication, and fundraising.
  • Coordinate with other RA global departments to ensure cohesion in the overall program execution.
  • Ensure that Rainforest Alliance’s communications teams receive regular information about progress in the cocoa program and interesting stories for dissemination through media channels.
  • Organize logistical support for international specialists, journalists, project auditors, and other stakeholders who visit field project sites.
  • Represent Rainforest Alliance as needed with local donors, government representatives, visiting dignitaries, and other outside parties.
  • Support the Indonesia Director to identify new project opportunities, support in proposal writing, and presenting new proposals to the potential donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisor Responsibility:
This position may oversee staff.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in agriculture, Natural Resources Management, or a tropical agriculture-related field.
  • 7-10 years of relevant experience that includes project management, including managing budgets and implementing activities according to agreed-upon work plans and schedules.
  • Competence in main computer software programs.
  • First-hand knowledge of the concepts of sustainable agriculture and knowledge of the cocoa industry required; and in the coffee, tea, cocoa, and palm sectors preferred.
  • Understanding of business and cocoa value chains.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to manage remote staff and consultants across multiple locations in Indonesia.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to operate efficiently in multi-institutional relationships and to communicate with farmers, government ministers, donor representatives, and/or company executives.
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, assess priorities, and multi-task with strong attention to detail.
  • Understanding of/experience with spatial planning processes, landscape, and jurisdictional approaches to integrated land use management, and working with farmers, communities, companies, civil society organizations, and government to achieve sustainable development goals.
  • Administrative efficiency, with the ability to track project progress and prepare timely reports.
  • Fluent written and spoken Bahasa and English.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25 percent of the time.
