The Senior Communications Manager for Montana & Wyoming develops, manages and implements focused communications and media strategies that facilitate comprehension, adoption and advancement of the organization’s goals and objectives. They are responsible for the creation, management, and implementation of strategic communications plans to build awareness, engage targeted audiences, and influence conservation action. They identify communication and media needs and opportunities in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and help elevate stories from within the Montana and Wyoming chapters to the regional, national, and global marketing and communications teams within The Nature Conservancy.  They actively identify target audiences and cultivate media contacts on a local and national level, and they manage, track, and report on the dissemination of media information. They develop key messages and talking points and may write op-eds and statements in collaboration with chapter leadership. They supervise the production of newsletters, reports, and other materials, including managing graphic design and photographer contracts.
The Senior Manager actively identifies target audiences and cultivates media contacts on a local and regional level, and they manage and track the dissemination of media information. They provide consultation, media training, coaching, and talking points to persons serving as spokesperson(s) and may serve as a spokesperson themselves. Some travel will be required within the US. Travel within Montana and Wyoming includes visits to field sites with 4WD roads, rugged walking terrain, extreme weather, and rustic accommodations.

As Senior Communications Manager, you will:

  • Manage and serve as a team lead on assigned communications projects, including magazines, newsletters, reports, fact sheets, web pages, event materials, and print and electronic communications.
  • Develop, implement, and measure media relations strategies for the Montana and Wyoming chapters.
  • Cultivate and maintain contacts within local and regional media, identify and pitch stories to those contacts, connect journalists with staff for interviews, and respond to inquiries from reporters.
  • In collaboration with chapter leadership and Director of Marketing & Communications, develop key messages, talking points, op-eds, and statements.
  • Provide coaching and consultation prepare non-communications staff for media interviews.
  • May supervise professional and/or administrative staff.
  • Manage assigned budget, evaluate results and develop recommendations for corrective strategies as needed.
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting project goals and objectives.
