The holder of the position should represent the research field of Ecology of Urban and Rural Systems in the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Environmental Sciences in an internationally visible manner and further develop the excellent scientific profile of the TU Braunschweig in this field in an innovative way. The ecology of urban and rural systems aims to understand ecosystemic and anthropogenically influenced patterns and processes, including the influences of land management, landscape design and infrastructure development in the urban and agricultural landscape habitats. The aim of the research is, among other things, to assess the consequences of landscape and land use changes with regard to biodiversity and ecosystem functions, including those caused by climate change stressors. The research is cross-sphere and links questions on the environment, biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services across different spatial and temporal scales.
Possible research foci are:
- Analysis and simulation of complex landscape and land use systems in urban and rural areas;
- Ecological adaptation pathways for coping with the problems of biodiversity and climate change;
- Statistical analysis and mechanistic, process-oriented modeling of patterns and developments of urban and rural habitats and the land use systems that shape them;
- Impact assessment of landscape and land use changes with regard to biodiversity and ecosystem functions;
- Combining modeling methods with field and/or experimental ecology;
- Animal-, plant- or limnoecology;
- Interface between terrestrial and aquatic habitats on coasts and shores.
The successful candidate (f/m/d) is expected to be committed to the university’s strategic goals and to actively shape its holistic development (https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/hochschulentwicklung). In addition to the classic service areas of a university (research, teaching and studies, transfer, governance and administration), this applies in particular to digitalisation, internationalisation, equality and diversity, as well as knowledge exchange.
The professorship is associated with the management of a department at the Institute of Geoecology. In teaching, part of the teaching commitment is to be provided in the basic subjects of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. The courses offered also complement the courses offered in the Environmental Engineering degree program. Teaching should be research-oriented and convey practical research methods in the context of excursions or landscape ecology field methods, for example. As part of the internationalization of teaching, courses taught in the English language should also be developed and implemented. Active participation in the development of the research focus “City of the Future” is desired.
- The successful candidate (f/m/d) has a relevant academic and practical track record and several years of professional experience. Scientific excellence should be demonstrated through publication activity in international peer-reviewed journals and through successful acquisition of third-party funding. Experience in applying for and working on projects from scientifically demanding third-party funding bodies such as the DFG or the ERC is desirable;
- National and international networking;
- Practical experience in the scope of field ecology and experimental ecology;
- Didactic aptitude, language skills for teaching in German and English;
- Experience in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation;
- Willingness to actively participate in faculty matters and committees;
- Ability to work in a team and social competence.
Individual career decisions and career breaks due to parental/family care leave affecting research output will be taken into account by the appointment committee.
Education, Skills and Other Requirements
- A degree in a relevant field;
- Pedagogical aptitude;
- Special qualification for in‑depth independent scientific work, as a rule proven by an above-average doctorate;
- Additional academic achievements, usually within the framework of a junior professorship, a postdoctoral degree (Habilitation) or through achievements equivalent to a Habilitation.
