Description

The NBS and Equitable Adaptation Specialist will play a significant role in building and establishing TNC’s leadership in the field of adaptation and in ensuring that the organization’s work on adaptation is equitable, gender-responsive and socially inclusive, while advancing biodiversity goals and climate justice. They will lead and/or manage small to large-scale complex projects and grants that may span multiple business units and country programs and support the management of relationships central to the team’s strategy. They will serve as a technical resource for business units, regions, and country teams. For instance, they will help countries and regions identify their geographies’ key adaptation needs, build adaptation strategies and pathways, and support the design and implementation of Nature based Solutions (NBS) to help achieve the geographies’ equitable adaptation objectives – recognizing adaptation, climate vulnerability and resilience building as largely social processes.

They will work to build and strengthen strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field. They will serve as a contact to government agencies, other conservation and civil society organizations, foundations, and the academic community. They will establish TNC as a major conservation and adaptation partner and define conservation priorities in their area of responsibility. They lead and/or support fundraising activities and assess, propose, and manage communication opportunities in coordination with the Global Adaptation Director.

The NBS and Equitable Adaptation Specialist will play a critical role in embedding equity considerations into the design, implementation and monitoring & evaluation of adaptation and conservation projects and strategies with field teams across the organization, and in support of them. This will be accomplished by integrating principles of equity and justice in the design and implementation of NBS, by strengthening technical capacity of country teams and partners, and by creating, managing, and promoting internal and external partnerships.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Working within highly matrixed and globally dispersed teams, helps build, promote, and implement a portfolio of equitable adaptation initiatives and programs across the organization.
  • Advises, designs, and supports implementation of strategies and theories of change.
  • Engages with and manages cross disciplinary knowledge to support program objectives including conservation and adaptation science, Indigenous and local knowledge, and grey literature; and integrates the knowledge into applicable, on the ground actions.
  • Provides technical support to country teams in the areas of equity, justice, gender, governance, livelihoods, conservation, NBS, vulnerability and risk assessments, and similar.
  • Collaborates across multiple geographies and cultural contexts.
  • Frequent travel internationally.
  • May work in variable weather conditions and at remote locations.

The location for this position is flexible within countries where The Nature Conservancy has an established office.
