Freshwater Specialist develops, manages, and advances Freshwater conservation project plans and methods for small to medium scale geographic areas.

Freshwater specialist provides technical support and leadership to Mongolia Freshwater Project by planning and implementing freshwater conservation activities. The Freshwater specialist addresses critical threats to freshwater ecosystem and aquatic biodiversity, fosters cross-site learning among an international conservation community, and supplies multiple supporting teams with freshwater conservation information relevant to watershed conservation planning process. The Freshwater specialist supports the development and coordinates implementation of freshwater conservation strategies, employ a full range of protection methods and tools to acquire varying degrees of legal interest in rivers protection and watershed management, and implements a variety of strategies to secure public and private support to freshwater conservation priorities. The Freshwater Specialist coordinates partners and community support, and provides training and consulting required by the multiple partners. The position will be based in Ulaanbaatar office of TNC Mongolia.

Responsibilities and Scope

  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Supervises technical, administrative, and professional service providers, and coordinate with relevant Business Unit staff,
  • Prepares and updates as needed the project workplan and budget, and have approved by supervisor,
  • Leads implementation processes of Mongolia Freshwater Project to ensure effective and timely delivery of project outcomes and reporting with internal policies and external requirements,
  • Liaises with relevant departments of state and local government agencies, project partners and other stakeholders,
  • Ensures timely reporting on project results and outcomes to the TNC global and regional leadership team,
  • Ensures the delivery of the monitoring, evaluation and learning framework of project, including tracking milestones, compiling of outcomes, lessons learnt and best practices,
  • integrates Gender, Diversity and Equity Inclusion (GDEI) into the project and reported.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Ensures compliance with TNC policies and procedures, and external (donor, legal, IRS) requirements.

Requirements

  • BA/BS, law or business degree and 5 years’ experience in freshwater and natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, national and local government officials, scientific community and get along with others on the team and supports collaboration.
  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Experience with communication via written, spoken, and graphical means in Mongolian and English.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.
  • Experience in training and curriculum design.

Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5 years’ experience in freshwater ecosystem protection and or similar field of natural resource management or equivalent combination of education in river ecology, hydrology, wetlands, and aquatic biodiversity.
  • Have passion and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities in freshwater and healthy river.
  • Have excellent presentation, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work closely and effectively with a variety of partners, i.e., me dia, government officials, internal scientists.
  • Be able to manage multiple projects activities with dynamic schedules and priorities and be flexible to changes in prioritization of project.
  • Be dependable, self-motivated, well-organized, and able to work independently with respect to responsibilities and timelines.
