The consultant will lead and develop a marine and coastal OECM coherence guidance document as applied in the East Asian Seas, focusing on best practices and opportunities while avoiding a prescriptive approach. Additionally, the consultant will facilitate a two-day workshop to support OECM learning and knowledge exchange.
Expected Duration: 8 months (10 April 2025 – 10 November 2025)
Job responsibilities
The consultant will work towards an OECM coherence guidance document for the East Asian Seas, emphasizing marine and coastal OECMs. The key tasks include:
- Conducting a scoping study based on desk reviews, country consultations, and other relevant approaches.
- Reviewing OECM modalities applied in the region and globally where relevant.
- Studying best practices for marine and coastal OECMs across COBSEA participating countries.
- Developing effective communication materials on OECMs in the region.
- Creating training materials and preparing for a regional training session in August 2025.
- Facilitating the OECM training in close collaboration with the COBSEA Secretariat.
Job requirements
- A second-level university degree (Master’s or higher) in environmental sciences, natural resource management, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in marine and coastal environmental issues.
- Experience with Marine Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation
- Measures, preferably in the East Asian Seas region.
- Experience in facilitating knowledge sharing, learning exchanges, and/or interactive lectures is an asset.
- Previous experience working in a multicultural environment, including the United Nations, is an advantage.
- Familiarity with COBSEA’s work is desirable.
- In-depth knowledge of the East Asian Seas region, including national policy and legislative frameworks.
- Strong analytical skills, written and oral communication skills, and facilitation skills.
Languages
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
- Knowledge of other regional languages is an advantage.
