The Greenpeace USA communications team is integral to all of the work that we do.

The Director of Campaign Communications is a key role, driving the broader communications strategy for Greenpeace US and uses data insights to oversee the development of overarching narratives, messaging, positioning and media content across campaigns (Climate, Democracy, Plastics, Oceans) to enhance the impact and effectiveness of distinct campaign and organization-wide goals.

The Director will have overall responsibility for ensuring the integration of national media strategies with campaigning and other organizational goals to increase visibility in the national news media, including print, broadcast and online news outlets, and in select local media for strategic campaign purposes.

The Campaign Communications Director is an exempt, full-time, benefits eligible role that can be based in any location Greenpeace is authorized to work in and reports to the Communications Director based in DC.

The Campaign Communications Director will:

  • Work closely with organization leadership to help guide and realize the effective utilization of news media to achieve campaign and organizational goals.
  • Oversee development of media strategies, objectives, plans and evaluations working closely with the Director of Communications. Participate in the development and implementation of the organization’s overarching communications strategy.
  • Manage the communications strategists embedded on GPUS campaign teams, which includes staff in multiple offices/locations. Ensure that the communications team plays a leadership role in the development of key project, campaign and organizational messaging. Ensure consistency and maximum appropriate visibility of GPUS in external messaging.
  • Ensure communication and coordination between the Program and Development department. Manage external consultants and agencies as needed.
  • Manage key communications and relationships with internal and external project stakeholders including Greenpeace International, Greenpeace national/regional offices (NROs) and external project agencies and consultants.
  • Develop and manage effective project reporting and evaluation mechanisms.
  • Apprise Director of Communications and co-Executive Directors on potential and imminent public relations crises and, working closely with Communications Director, help manage media crises and public statements on litigation and other sensitive issues.
  • Serve as organization spokesperson when required.
  • Write statements, op-eds and other materials and rigorously edit all public statements, news releases and other output as required.
  • Develop and manage the budget of the media department and monitor expenses.
  • Maintain relationships with journalists and ensure press lists are updated regularly.
