Promote Pollinators is looking forward to hosting a side event during the SBSTTA-26 in Nairobi. This event will take place on May 17th at 13:15 – 14:45 EAT (12:15 – 13:45 CEST). The event is hybrid, so you can join even if you are not in Nairobi. This free event will focus on European monitoring framework for pollinating insects at regional, national & local scale.
Over the past 3 years a collaborative effort between the European Commission’s Horizon research initiative and the European Parliament has led to the development and rigorous testing of comprehensive frameworks for monitoring pollinating insects. These frameworks provide clear guidance for EU Member States to monitor pollinator populations and understand the pressures affecting them.
Join our event to explore the detailed system, which includes targets, indicators, sampling methods, and capacity-building programs like our pollinator training academy. You will discover our specialized framework for urban areas, empowering scientists and policymakers to protect local pollinators.
Program
The event aims to provide inspiration by sharing knowledge on the European monitoring framework for pollinating insects. The webinar will last about 1,5 hours and will be divided into two parts: presentations and a panel discussion between experts.
Presentations
Various experts will present the process that was followed for both frameworks and the key outcomes and lessons learned. Together, we will show how to monitor, how to train citizen scientists, how to build taxonomic capacity and so on.
The view of a policymaker
Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias will present his views on monitoring in the context of policymaking. Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dia is Director for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use at the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, and former Executive Secretary to the CBD.
Overview of the European framework
Dr. Koos Biesmeijer will present the European framework for the monitoring of pollinators seen from a systematic point of view. Dr. Koos Biesmeijer is a leading expert on the topic of pollinators and pollination and scientific director at Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden, The Netherlands. Prof. Biesmeijer was one of the co-authors of the IPBES Assessment on pollinators, pollination and food production.
Knowledge, skills and technology
Dr. Koos Biesmeijer will also present the way these elements have been addressed in the context of the framework.
Citizens science to the next level
Dr. David Roy will present the state of the art on citizens science and how this has been implemented in the European pollinator monitoring framework. Dr. David Roy is head of the Biological Records Centre at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and Professor of Ecology at the University of Exeter. He is an expert on environmental monitoring and assessment and has a particular expertise in Citizen Science approaches.
The urban context
Dr. Katherine Baldock will give an overview of approaches for monitoring urban environments. Dr. Katherine Baldock is an Associate Professor in Ecology at Northumbria University in the UK. She is a community ecologist with expertise in pollinators and pollination services, particularly in urban landscapes.
Panel discussion
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion. All presenters will participate in the panel discussion. The panel will be complemented by Hien Ngo (FAO). We will discuss the challenges and barriers encountered during development of the frameworks, and the options to deal with the barriers adequately.
