On 9 November 2022 (11:30-1 pm EET), GGKP, PAGE, UNEP, UNIDO, UNITAR, ESCWA, UNECE, UN-OHRLLS will organise a high-level side event on the transition to a Circular Economy at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh.
Fiscal pressures and the immediate needs of covering energy demand and ensuring food security make it challenging to put in place the policies that are needed to lay the ground for economic transformation. Despite being widely recognized as an effective vehicle in the fight against climate change, circular economy is not reflected in approximately 60 percent of the submitted NDCs.
By bringing together representatives of governments, private sector, think tanks and youth, this event will discuss strategies to accelerate the global shift towards a circular economy in the context of mounting debt levels and a food and energy breakdown that threatens to derail progress towards sustainable development, particularly for developing countries.
The outcomes of the global consultations on circular economy, convened by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Communiqué of the 2020 G20 Energy Ministerial Meeting, organized under the presidency of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the Circular Carbon economy (CCE), together with the initiatives of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) and the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) will feed the multi-stakeholder panel discussion. Concrete measures and actions will be proposed as a contribution to the construction of a collective framework.
The event will be live streamed and the link will be made available closer to the date.
In advance of the event, you can join a community discussion on circular economy on the Green Forum.
