Conservation areas are safe havens for biodiversity, and each area is home to unique species of plants and animals. A biodiversity monitoring programme is essential to show whether management actions are effective.
In collaboration with the IUCN WCPA, and as part of the Austrian FFG-funded project BioMONITec, UNESCO Chair researchers at Carinthia University of Applied Sciences led a large international team to produce a framework for developing biodiversity monitoring programmes in conservation areas.
The Technical Report Series guideline “A framework for monitoring biodiversity in protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures: Concepts, methods and technologies” will be released on April 22nd, 2024 and available for free download on the IUCN library platform.
