Multi-stakeholder Engagement Workshop for Countries Supported by the BES Solution Fund

The BES Solution Fund Workshop Series - Part 2

The BES Solution Fund is a catalytic fund provided under the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) project to support selected countries that participated in BES-Net’s past Regional Trialogues (triangular dialogue and capacity-building methodology for policy, science, and practice communities) or developed national ecosystem assessments in implementing their respective national action plans to support tangible, on-the-ground biodiversity solutions.

In 2021, BES-Net II embarked on a series of knowledge exchange and capacity-building workshops to support the BES Solution Fund target countries. The introductory workshop was held in October 2021, bringing together about 30 participants from Kazakhstan, Kenya, Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago. The workshop aimed to build a Community of Practice (CoP) and foster peer-to-peer learning among the countries through sharing experiences regarding the workplan development and initial implementation of the BES Solution Fund.

The workshop's overarching intention was to provide the BES Solution Fund countries with a greater understanding of the benefits and methods of engaging with stakeholders.

The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) organized a capacity-building workshop on multi-stakeholder engagement. The workshop's overarching intention was to provide the BES Solution Fund countries with a greater understanding of the benefits and methods of engaging with stakeholders during the implementation of the catalytic fund, including the Trialogic approach, a signature solution developed by BES-Net to engage science, policy, and practice communities.

Objectives of the Multi-stakeholder Engagement Workshop

The capacity-building workshop was held virtually on 23 February 2022. It was the second workshop to be held in 2022 to enhance the capacity and mutual learning of the BES Solution Fund countries on various thematic topics. Particularly, it aimed to:

Respond to the request from BES Solution Fund countries for more information on stakeholder engagement and different methods to practice it.

Identify opportunities and challenges in engaging various stakeholders in the implementation of the BES Solution Fund and broader biodiversity work at the national level.

Co-create a strategic vision for actively interacting with and involving the identified key stakeholders in the different workplan implementation processes, including the reflection on the entry points, the levels of engagement and the methods to be used.

Share good stakeholder engagement practices developed by countries for peer-to-peer learning.

Further, the capacity-building workshop aimed to target key partners from the science, policy and practice communities who are actively interacting with stakeholders or are interested in engaging stakeholders at the national and local level during the implementation of the BES Solution Fund and have been involved in or are familiar with the BES Solution Fund workplan development in their respective countries.
