Trinidad and Tobago

Overview

Trinidad and Tobago has a high species diversity to surface area ratio owing to its small size, strategic location and geological relationship with the South American continent. Its ecosystem range encompasses evergreen seasonal, semi-evergreen seasonal, deciduous seasonal, littoral woodlands, lower montane rainforests, seasonal montane forests, montane rainforests, elfin woodlands, swamp forests (including mangrove woodlands), palm swamps, marshes and savannahs.

  • Trinidad and Tobago participated in the Caribbean Regional Trialogue organized under BES-Net I in September 2018.
  • Under BES-Net II, the country received catalytic support through the BES Solution Fund to implement key priority national actions identified during the Trialogue towards the uptake of the IPBES Global Assessment on Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production.
  • Through the support concluded at the end of 2024, the country team mobilized citizen science contributions to the INaturalist database for pollinators, with over 760 species identified, established three pollinator gardens and developed stingless be management guidelines which are undergoing review. The country also joined the Coalition of the Willing on Pollinators to demonstrate its commitment towards pollinator protection and management.
