Côte d’ Ivoire is home to rich biological diversity with thousands of plant and animal species whose conservation and management is crucial not only for ensuring sustainable ecosystems but also maintaining the livelihoods of the local populations in the country. The natural wealth of biodiversity in the country is threatened by several factors, including the proliferation of invasive alien species, climate change, overexploitation of natural resources and uncontrolled deforestation.
- As part of the strong commitment to addressing the threats to biodiversity in the country and to ensure their sustainable management, Côte d’ Ivoire, through the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and Ecological Transition (MINEDDTE) hosted the BES-Net Regional Trialogue for West and Central Africa in June 2024 in Abidjan with the objective of raising awareness on the key messages of the two IPBES assessment reports on sustainable use of wild species (2022) and invasive alien species (IAS) and their control (2023) and promoting science, policy and practice uptake of the relevant recommendations for the report in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
- To support in the implementation of priority actions identified during the Trialogue and formulated into an action plan, Côte d’ Ivoire is receiving catalytic support from BES-Net Phase II known as the BES Solution Fund since late 2024. The support is geared towards (i) strengthening the integration of biodiversity issues, including incorporation of the IPBES assessment on IAS and sustainable use of wild species into national development plan and priorities, (ii) raising awareness among a wide range of stakeholders including women, youth and local communities on the two IPBES assessment and (iii) mobilizing finances and strengthening strategic partnerships to implement large scale actions for biodiversity including controlling of IAS and sustainably using wild species.
