Cambodia

Overview

Cambodia has one of the most biodiverse and valuable ecosystems in Southeast Asia, including mountains (such as the Cardamom Mountains), evergreen and deciduous forests, swamp forests, wetlands (such as the Tonle Sap ecosystem) and vibrant marine and coastal ecosystems.

  • Under BES-Net II, the country is receiving support to promote the engagement of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in its ongoing assessment process. The national assessment process is being led by the Royal University of Phnom Penh and the General Secretariat of the National Council for Sustainable Development with support from UNEP-WCMC. UNESCO provides technical backstopping support to the engagement of indigenous peoples and local communities in the assessment process.
  • Cambodia is also a priority country for future catalytic support under BES-Net II’s BES Solution Fund to promote the uptake of national ecosystem assessment recommendations once the process is finalized in 2023.
