Description

One Acre Fund operates one of Africa’s largest agroforestry programs, supporting over 2 million farmers through a network of 2,500+ rural nurseries run by local entrepreneurs. The Agroforestry Manager will play a key role in addressing smallholder farmers’ challenges related to extreme poverty, climate change, and biodiversity loss through agroforestry and Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR).

In this role, you will strengthen and improve existing agroforestry programs, contribute to the goal of planting one billion trees by 2030, and work closely with a dedicated international agroforestry team. You will support 10 embedded agroforestry teams across different country programs, reporting to the Agroforestry Director.

Job Responsibilities

1. Agroforestry Program Management:

  • Support agroforestry program leads across 10 country programs to meet operational targets for seedling production, adoption, survival rates, and species diversification.
  • Manage performance tracking systems to monitor scale, impact, and ecosystem service indicators.
  • Strengthen team cohesion and knowledge-sharing across the agroforestry teams through team-building activities and improved knowledge management.
  • Scope, pilot, and scale new investments to enhance program impact, such as improving seedling survival rates, launching tech-driven solutions, and addressing seedling supply challenges.

2. External Partnerships & Communication:

  • Facilitate partnership development by engaging with forestry and landscape restoration organizations.
  • Communicate program results and plans to external stakeholders through data, visuals, and storytelling.
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with policy-makers, technical experts, and local implementers in the agroforestry and restoration sectors.

3. Strategic Growth & Leadership:

  • Provide strategic leadership for agroforestry initiatives, ensuring alignment with One Acre Fund’s vision.
  • Offer technical support and guidance to improve nursery operations, farmer training, and climate adaptation strategies.
  • Manage multi-year, multi-project budgeting and planning for agroforestry and restoration initiatives.

4. Career Growth & Development:

  • Participate in weekly check-ins, mentorship programs, and structured career development plans.
  • Receive regular feedback and performance evaluations every six months.

Job Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • University or advanced degree in Agroforestry, Ecology, Restoration, or related fields.
  • Minimum 3+ years of leadership experience in agroforestry, restoration, or a related domain in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Familiarity with nature-based carbon projects, implementation, and certification is an added advantage.
  • Proven track record in launching new programs and building partnerships in the forestry and restoration sectors.

Technical & Management Skills:

  • Experience managing high-level team members and coordinating complex, scalable programs.
  • Data-driven decision-making skills, with structured analysis and fact-based recommendations.
  • Strong understanding of multi-year project budgeting and financial planning.
  • Ability to engage and communicate with diverse audiences, including rural farmers, technical experts, policymakers, and leadership teams.

Languages & Travel:

  • English fluency is required.
  • Additional preferred languages: Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Chichewa, Amharic, or French.
  • Willingness to travel within the region (up to 25% of the time).
