Description

CIFOR-ICRAF is seeking a Nationally Recruited Scientist to support research, project management, and stakeholder engagement in biodiversity and Central African forest ecosystems. The scientist will work closely with CIFOR-ICRAF’s research team to contribute to project management, research design, data collection, knowledge production, and policy engagement.

Job responsibilities

Project management & coordination:

  • Plan and monitor research projects and follow up with the LAO and OFAC consortium members.
  • Co-supervise consultants and interns involved in the OFAC-CE project.
  • Develop and contribute to the preparation of donor reports.
  • Coordinate the organization of workshops, meetings, and virtual discussions.

Research design, data collection & analysis:

  • Conduct research in partnership with CIFOR-ICRAF teams and national/international universities, especially within the OFAC-CE project.
  • Develop detailed methodologies for data collection and analysis.
  • Contribute to the design of complementary studies on biodiversity resource management in Central Africa.
  • Provide GIS expertise as needed for the project.
  • Organize CIFOR-hosted scientific events.
  • Promote the integration of research findings into stakeholder policies and practices.
  • Update scientific information on forest and biodiversity for CIFOR-ICRAF’s website.

Resource mobilization:

  • Contribute to proposal writing and fundraising activities.

Financial management:

  • Manage project resources in accordance with CIFOR’s procedures and regulations.

Job requirements

Education & experience:

  • PhD in Forestry, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of research experience in biodiversity, forestry, or conservation.
  • Background in biodiversity monitoring or forest ecosystem management.
  • Experience participating in international projects or policy development.
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

Technical skills:

  • Proficiency in data analysis software (R, GIS, etc.).
  • Understanding of forest conservation principles, policies, and practices.
  • Familiarity with sustainable forestry practices (e.g., selective logging, reforestation).
  • Knowledge of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration, water cycling, and soil conservation.
  • Strong skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience in project management and securing funding.

Competencies:

  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Understanding of policy and regulatory frameworks related to biodiversity and forestry.
  • Basic knowledge of gender issues and gender-sensitive research.
