This COP16 side event focuses on leveraging spatial data and biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning to advance national priorities and achieve Target 1 of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This event aims to bring together Parties from various ecosystems and contexts to share valuable lessons learned and promote collaborative discussions.
Event Objectives
- Knowledge Sharing: Gain insights from diverse Parties on utilizing spatial data and biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning, aimed at addressing national priorities while preserving biodiversity.
- Resource Overview: Discover existing data and tools designed to support all Parties in developing integrated spatial plans that align with Targets 1, 2, 3, and beyond.
- Promote Exchange: Engage in dynamic discussions and peer-to-peer exchanges that highlight national resources and needs regarding spatial data and planning tools to bolster action on the GBF.
Target 1 in Focus
As outlined in Target 1, Parties must aim to minimize the loss of high-biodiversity areas to near-zero by 2030 while enhancing effective management of land and water resources. This requires participatory and integrated biodiversity-inclusive spatial planning, yet best practices and definitions for this essential process are still emerging. Our event will showcase various approaches and tools employed by Parties to create integrated spatial plans that benefit both biodiversity and communities.
What to Expect
This event will feature:
- Four Innovative Spatial Planning Solutions: Learn about successful spatial planning initiatives implemented in diverse national contexts, showcasing their effectiveness and adaptability.
- Three New Guidance Documents: Be among the first to explore the latest guidelines on spatial planning released by DEFRA, FAO, and IUCN, providing invaluable insights for practical application.
