Land-based investments in emerging markets have increasingly become a focal point for economic development, yet they often come at a significant cost to human rights and environmental sustainability. In developing economies such as Africa, the demand for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and pursuit of economic growth through land acquisitions results in land grabbing, violent conflicts, exacerbates gender and geographical inequalities, displacement of communities, and violations of indigenous peoples’ rights. To commemorate this year’s World Environment Day, it is important to examine how development projects in Africa does not undermine democratic governance and worsen human and environmental rights. Consequently, this webinar will discuss the impacts of climate change and development projects, land-based investments, and other sustainability projects, on human rights including the rights of local communities, indigenous peoples, and marginalized groups. It will also examine legal frameworks, policies, and mechanisms for protecting human and environmental rights in Africa.
