About the event
Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Environmental Net Gain Manager Dr Gigi Hennessy will explain how BNG works and answer some frequently asked questions such as whether BNG is stackable with other agri-environment schemes and how long a BNG agreement lasts for.
Background
From November 2023, developers will need to achieve a 10% increase or ‘net gain’ in biodiversity as part of any planning project. If this is unachievable within their development site, developers can pay other landowners to carry out habitat improvements on their behalf.
This means farmers and land managers in Staffordshire have the opportunity to generate income from their land by selling ‘biodiversity units’ to developers.
BNG can be used to generate an income on less productive areas of land, while supporting wildlife at the same time.
It depends on where your land is and what the existing habitat is, but on average landowners can earn up to £20,000 per Biodiversity Unit (sometimes also known as a ‘BNG Unit’). A Biodiversity Unit is essentially an area of habitat, and it is calculated using a metric that takes into account the size of the habitat, its quality and location.
