WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Associate Director of Conservation Science is a science generalist who provides leadership and project management for teams of conservation scientists and practitioners across Oregon to ensure that TNC’s conservation actions are driven and supported by evidence. They enable TNC conservation practitioners and scientists to engage with and draw from a wide array of scientific disciplines and knowledge systems, including but not limited to natural, social, and physical sciences and Indigenous or traditional knowledge. They help drive the adaptive management of TNC’s conservation strategies and actions. They supervise and manage staff members. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

We’re looking for someone who can:

  • Lead TNC-Oregon’s science team
  • Coordinate and management the “monitoring-evaluation-learning” efforts for TNC-Oregon’s strategic Plan. This includes collaborating with conservation, science, & stewardship staff to guide the adaptive management of TNC-Oregon’s conservation strategies.
  • Provide project management for high priority / high profile conservation science projects, including grant and manuscript / report writing, partner coordination, data management analysis, and external communication.
  • Supervise science, GIS, and internship / fellowship positions and administer budgets.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Master’s Degree in science related field and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience managing staff, project, workloads and finances under deadlines.                                     
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information.        
  • Experience preparing reports of findings. 
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest conservation and natural resource management issues.
  • Experience integrating natural, physical, and social sciences, as well as traditional knowledge, to inform applied conservation solutions.
  • Commitment to practical solutions to conservation challenges for nature and people.

SALARY INFORMATION

Estimated starting salary: $79,100 – $86,200 annually, dependent on qualifications and experience.
