Duration of contract: 1 year with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance.

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences (SC/EES) and under the specific supervision of the Chief of Section MAB Research and Policy: Ecology and Biodiversity (SC/EES/ESP), the incumbent shall provide support to the Chief of Section working on the implementation of the activities related to the MAB biodiversity extra-budgetary projects.

The incumbent shall in particular be required to perform the following duties:

 

Long Description

  • Provide support for the preparation and implementation of biodiversity project activities in the concerned countries and at Headquarters.
  • Strengthen the MAB Programme’s role as a science-policy interface and contribute to positioning the MAB Programme and its World Network of Biosphere Reserves as relevant stakeholders in the international biodiversity agenda.
  • Contribute to the preparation of capacity-building workshops, training material and data collection in coordination with UNESCO offices and in partnership with relevant international scientific partners, in particular in relation with and in favor of youth networks and representatives.
  • Support the development of intergenerational scientific dialogue and exchanges within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, in collaboration with major global youth networks.
  • Provide political and logistical support for the implementation and monitoring of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the Joint Programme of Work on the Linkages between Biological and Cultural Diversity within the WNBR and by/with its Youth Networks.
  • Set up, maintain and upgrade outreach and communication tools in cooperation with the responsible officer at SC/EES for the CBD processes and other international frameworks related to biodiversity, including the production of key publications and documents related to the biosphere reserves.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in the field of ecological and/or environmental sciences or a related field, ideally with a background in natural science and/or political science.

Work Experience

  • At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in the field of ecological and/or environmental sciences or a related field, ideally with a background in natural science and/or political science of which preferably one (1) year acquired at the international level (i.e. within an United Nations agency, programme and/or an international organization).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Education in environmental policy, scientific diplomacy and project management.

Work Experience

  • Experience related to the Convention on Biological Diversity
  • Knowledge of the United Nations system’s organization on biodiversity issues
  • Understanding and knowledge of youth-led organizations and networks, preferably at the international level

Skills and competencies

  • Knowledge of the UNESCO – MAB Programme and of UNESCO’s overall work and programmes in the area of Natural Sciences.
  • Acquaintance with the rules, regulations, administrative procedures and standard practices of an international organization.

Languages

  • Good knowledge of French (written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of other official UNESCO languages (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).

BENEFITS AND ENTITLEMENTS

UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.

The approximate annual starting salary for this post is  77,127.19 US $.
