The Amazon Freshwater Fisheries Scientist will support multiple field programs in their development of freshwater fisheries programs, including the deployment of freshwater conservation plans. They will adapt existing tools in the freshwater and marine realms to support local project and support adaptive management though the development and implementation of monitoring and evaluation programs. This scientist position will support the global team in promoting the importance of fisheries and freshwater biodiversity protection and conservation in international fora and develop and cultivate relationships with partners and stakeholders.

The Amazon Freshwater Fisheries Scientist will provide the following (1) technical support to fisheries management projects (especially community-based fisheries) with an emphasis on the Amazon Basin, including developing and managing program objectives, strategies, assessment techniques, and measures; (2) scientific surveys and research, including recording data, writing reports, publishing results, and developing proposals; (3) collect and manage data for species targeted in fisheries and endangered, threatened and special aquatic species; (4) analyze species, habitat, and ecosystem priorities and assess data to prioritize areas for conservation; and (5) adapt existing fisheries tools and methods for use in local contexts and projects.

The Amazon Freshwater Fisheries Scientist will be an active member of the Provide Food & Water and Water Security teams. They will work across business units within the Conservancy and work closely with staff primarily in the Latin America region, as well as specific country programs within that region, including Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. The Amazon Freshwater Fisheries Scientist will provide thought leadership on opportunities for and barriers to freshwater fisheries conservation globally. Because this is a cross-boundary position, the ideal candidate will be able to work in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. This position involves domestic and international travel, up to 20% of the time, depending on COVID-19 restrictions, and the ideal candidate must be comfortable working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

The location of this position is flexible within countries that TNC has an established office and can hire with a strong preference for Brazil, Peru, or Colombia. No immigration or relocation assistance is available for this position.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of English, Spanish, and Portuguese
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines
  • Experience developing and implementing training workshops
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience negotiating
