Description

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic, experienced and creative media-relations expert and professional writer to raise the media profile of the Center’s Energy Justice and International programs.

The Center is the leading national voice in the movement to protect animals and plants on the brink of extinction. We’re also working to accelerate the just transition to a renewable and democratic energy future to protect wildlife and people, especially communities of color being disproportionately harmed by the climate emergency.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional writing skills, a strong working knowledge of journalism, and a passion for promoting energy and climate justice and protecting international wildlife, from elephants to sea cucumbers. Please have a strong desire to join a smart, committed, fun team working together to save life on Earth.

The Media Specialist will generate media stories, press releases, op-eds, reports and creative media products that drive local, state, national and international discussions. The specialist will work closely with journalists and Center scientists and attorneys across several time zones, occasionally act as a spokesperson, and drive communications strategies on a daily basis. Please note: Some projects will involve morning work in the Eastern time zone and potential international travel.

Primary duties:

  • Write and edit compelling press releases, op-eds, white papers, story pitches, blog posts, reports and other material for the Center’s Energy Justice and International programs.
  • Lead and execute strategies that produce high-impact print, web and broadcast media coverage of these two programs and their issues.
  • Manage, plan and help execute rapid responses to breaking news.
  • Provide expert media-relations advice to the directors and staff of the two programs.
  • Track local, national and international news that touches on the issues of the two programs and seek ways to become part of the news cycle.
  • Cultivate media relationships, pitch stories to reporters and editorial writers, and continually seek out new media opportunities.
  • Act as a public spokesperson as needed.
  • Provide media training to both programs’ staff, including scientists and legal experts.
  • Expand and refine the Center’s existing communications materials, including the website and regular publications.
  • Assist with other media-relations work as needed.
