Description

The DoD manages all major gift functions, which includes planned giving, principal gifts, donor prospecting and research, and special multi-year fundraising campaigns.  Works with senior staff to establish fundraising goals and is accountable for these goals working towards meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and managing plans and strategies.  Manages, and establishes fundraising goals for other NMFO fundraising staff. They manage vendor relationships, as needed. They will lead diverse activities, develop complex processes, project outcomes, and initiate solutions to improve effectiveness. Responsible for moving a select group of prospects forward. Focuses on long-range strategic priorities, advances the Conservancy’s goals, and communicates a broad vision to others. Understands and complies with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance. They are responsible for ensuring the programmatic work is a collaborative and well-integrated effort within development and across the organization, including organizing internal communications. The DoD leverages constructive and effective relationships with a wide range of people, including senior management, NMFO staff, donors, volunteers, public and private sector colleagues, and partners including financial/legal advisors. The DoD is the liaison with the Conservancy’s North America Marketing Resource Center, and in that role coordinates marketing and external communications for the NMFO.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Accountable for meeting all NMFO established fundraising goals.
  • Establish NMFO fundraising goals to support TNC’s global conservation programs.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation and capital campaigns.
  • Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with constituents such as major donors, foundations, and corporations.
  • Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision and sense of core purpose.  
  • While the primary responsibilities of the role are New Mexico focused, the DoD will work within a complex global non-profit organization with multiple nodes of communication and interactions. 
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and marshal resources throughout the entire organization.
  • Works positively and constructively with a variety of staff in New Mexico and in the broader global organization.
  • Possesses a working and effective understanding of the basics of charitable gift planning. Knowledge of more advanced gift planning concepts a plus.
  • Broad financial responsibility includes setting and meeting fundraising objectives, evaluating results, and developing corrective strategies as needed.
  • Develops and administers development department budget.
  • NMFO Board of Directors liaison. 
  • Superb communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including major donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are critical to the organization’s overall prosperity.
  • Leverages constructive and effective relationships with development team and leaders within the organization.
  • Coordinates NMFO’s marketing program and ensures that the creative work reflects the positioning, platform, and voice to meet all marketing objectives. They monitor the implementation of marketing, communications and public relations activities whether applied internally or outbound. They work closely with the marketing team, senior staff, conservation staff, and other key stakeholders to ensure delivery of projects that contribute to a positive image of NMFO and raises the visibility of the chapter’s conservation initiatives. They monitor the communications/marketing budget for the NMFO.  
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure.
  • Broad management responsibility for administrative and professional staff, including training, professional development, establishing clear directions, sets “stretch” objectives, and overseeing the execution of day-to-day work.
  • Commits actions and resources in a way that affects public image and binds the organization financially or legally.
  • Develops and administers budget and fundraising objectives; evaluates results and develops corrective strategies as needed.
  • Ensures that programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and legal requirements are met and managed for ethical compliance.
  • Leads new program initiatives that will ensure department and organization-wide goals and strategies are achieved. 
  • Implements and directs multiple projects, directing work of staff, managing budget, setting deadlines, and ensuring accountability.
  • Maintains confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information.
  • Manages strategic initiatives through collaboration with stakeholders to enhance performance in accordance with short and long-term objectives.

  • May direct or participate in negotiations for complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.

  • Travel occasionally, sometimes on short notice, may require working long hours and weekends.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
