Description

The Senior Director of Global Human Resources is directly responsible for leading and shaping Oceana’s Global Human Resources function. The Senior Director works closely with Oceana’s leadership to foster a workplace where talented, diverse people work together effectively with a common purpose to protect and restore the oceans.  

The Senior Director provides strategic and hands-on human resource leadership.  The position is responsible for all aspects of human resources functions including employee engagement, recruitment, performance management, compensation, benefits administration, employee relations, training, and compliance with employment laws and regulations.

As part of the Global Operation Services leadership team, the Senior Director works with colleagues to create systems, communications and activities to support a connected workforce aligned around common goals.  The Senior Director reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is based in the Washington, DC office, but has operational responsibilities for all Oceana country offices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Build and support an employee team that enables Oceana to successfully achieve its campaigns and fulfill its mission. Working with Oceana’s senior leadership team, establish human resources objectives in line with organizational objectives. Expand employee recruitment and performance management approaches as well as staff development and training initiatives to meet Oceana’s strategic and tactical needs, with a focus on management and campaign advocacy. Provide advice and support to managers to successfully manage individuals and teams, analyze situations and advise on actions and decisions.

Lead and manage initiatives to expand diversity, equity and inclusion at Oceana. Expand recruiting pipelines and career develop programs to grow the recruitment and retention of diverse staff. Develop and implement policies and training to ensure a culture where everyone feels welcome and can work productively and be treated fairly and equitably. Partner with campaign staff to support their efforts to identify the equity impact of Oceana policy campaigns.

Lead Global Human Resources functions, developing strategies, programs and policies to support the sustainable growth of “One Oceana” throughout the world. Lead efforts to ensure consistency of HR operations and purpose for more than 250 employees in nine countries plus the European Union, plus additional countries/offices as Oceana expands. Manage a team of three direct reports and work closely with staff responsible for HR functions in each Oceana office. This includes overseeing the implementation of a draft HR policies and procedures for application globally; oversee global compensation and benefits programs; organize bi-annual International All-Staff meeting for all employees and contribute to internal communications. Maintain knowledge of industry trends and employment legislation and oversee compliance in all Oceana locations. Support and monitor operational functions in country offices.
