Since the Convention on Biological Diversity entered into force in 1993, Article 8(j) has become widely known for its recognition of the « knowledge, innovation and practices of indigenous and local communities ». Subsequently, numerous treaties, agreements, and conventions at national and international levels have similarly made reference to the role that indigenous and local knowledge, know-how, and practices play in conserving biodiversity. Despite this growing recognition, numerous barriers remain.
