Description

The Sr. External Affairs Finance Specialist provides highly specialized finance/accounting-related services to the External Affairs business unit. They will work closely with the Finance Manager and will collaborate with teams throughout the business unit to support programs as they create and manage their budgets, monitor income and expense records, provide updated reporting and more. This position provides an opportunity to have an impact on achieving TNC’s mission as part of a dynamic team.

Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000 annually*

*TNC has eight different geographic tiers, utilizing competitive market data in establishing salary ranges. Each location where we work is assigned a geographic tier based upon the cost of hiring talent in that market and the salary ranges are adjusted accordingly.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Sr. External Affairs Finance Specialist provides highly specialized services in one or more of the following functions: financial analysis and reporting; financial management; accounting; auditing; grants administration, management controls and reporting; or similar financial activities for a department or business unit. They have a high level of expertise in their area(s) of specialization. The position administers and maintains finance/accounting activities in accordance with TNC policies and procedures and best practices in financial/organizational management. The Finance Specialist provides assistance to all levels of personnel in their specialty area. They respond to complex employee/management questions and problems based on advanced knowledge of the subject area. Work may shift between various departmental duties, and thus requires a flexible and enthusiastic team player. The Senior Finance Specialist reports to the External Affairs Finance Manager and is a key member of the External Affairs Operations Team, supporting a geographically dispersed team across the United States. They will work closely with Project Managers as well as Finance colleagues.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Handle technical side of multi-year budget planning.  
  • Support in year-end allocation of resources to projects.  
  • Respond to inquiries about private grant activities.  
  • Conduct research on expenses and income recorded to the financial system.  
  • Prepare journal entries and financial adjustments as needed.  
  • Monitor income and expense multi-year budgets, as well as related net assets.  
  • Generate accurate internal and donor financial reports.  
  • Communicate financial information to project managers.   
  • Answer moderately complex staff questions and problems.  
  • Ensure TNC policies and procedures, financial standards, and related legal requirements are met.
  • Reinforce consistency in the organization’s policies and procedures
  • Duties may include accounts payable activities, cash receipting forms, as well as other ad-hoc projects as requested.  
  • Possibly collaborate with the public grants team.  
  • Collaborate with the rest of the operations staff to ensure comprehensive support to all staff.
  • Works toward meeting the strategic priorities of the program by developing and coordinating tactics for approved plans and completing day-to-day tasks. 
  • Coordinates projects.
  • Ensures programmatic commitments, TNC policies and procedures, financial standards and legal requirements are met and managed for compliance.
  • Reinforces consistency in the organization’s policies and procedures and provides support related to relevant field.  
  • May participate in complex negotiations.
