Description

The Conservation Practitioner develops, manages, and advances conservation programs, plans and methods and provides technical leadership for the Northern Caribbean Program (The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos). 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Conservation Practitioner (CP) provides technical leadership and support for the Program’s marine (and other) conservation projects, including but not limited to: sustainable fisheries, coral conservation marine protected area and climate initiatives; by implementing strategies to address critical threats to natural systems and individual species; fostering cross-site learning among the conservation community and coordinating local community support. The CP coordinates multiple projects, by developing project packages, setting deadlines, managing project completion and maintaining project records. The CP manages (collects, assembles and analyzes) conservation and various types of data, and prepares technical reports. The CP also participates in conservation planning and stakeholder meetings and conducts fisheries and coral monitoring and assessments, in the field or through document surveys, interviews with fishers, scientists and government representatives. Work will be conducted both in the field (scientific surveys, scuba diving, etc.) and will also be based in an office setting. The position reports to the Northern Caribbean Program Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and context.
  • Supervises technical, administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Participates in dive-related operations and maintains dive equipment.
  • Performs fieldwork, including field monitoring, surveys and assessments.
  • May also be required to travel frequently
