Responsibilities
1.To guide the work of the Avian Species Team as head of the team the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
a) Implementing the programme of work on migratory birds;
b) Providing secretariat services for a number of Working Groups and Task Forces created by Resolutions adopted by the CMS Conference of the Parties.
c) Regularly planning, organizing and providing support to the organization of meetings and workshops, drafting papers, coordinating the preparation of expert papers, managing the meeting arrangements and secretariat services.
d) Developing new species actions plans and other initiatives and supporting Parties to elaborate national strategies to prevent threats to migratory birds.
e) Maintaining communication and relationships with external stakeholders such as MEA Secretariats, NGOs, governments and other organizations.
f) Supervising staff in the Unit and short-term interns and/or consultant(s) when required.
2. To provide support to existing Avian Species Instruments by:
a) Providing secretariat services for the eight Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering Avian species already concluded, including the compilation of periodic reports.
b) Developing the agenda for meetings of signatories (MOS) of existing Avian Species MOUs and the related documentation for monitoring the implementation of these MOUs, ensuring the accuracy of information and that all aspects of the work are properly covered and presented within the strategy framework.
3. To provide support to the ongoing functions of the CMS Secretariat by:
a) Preparing substantive documentation, including policy documents, related to the work of the Convention for submission to the Conference of the Parties (COP), Standing Committee and Scientific Council.
b) Promoting interest in the Convention at meetings:
c) Supporting the Communications, Information Management and Outreach (IMCA) Team in the organization of the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), an annual campaign on Migratory Birds, through documents and presentations, and other communication activities.
4. Perform any other related duties as required.
